Change Detection Research Interests
I became interested in change blindness after completing my doctoral thesis on subitization. There was evidence that the subitization limit was linked to there being a set capacity of visual short-term memory/attention. At Brunel University, we're looking at change detection using a psychophysical approach and have shown that the threshold for detecting a spatial frequency change increases with set-size. Our research is investigating whether these change detection set-size effects can be explained by signal detection theory. This approach can account for set-size effects in visual search in terms of spatial uncertainty, avoiding the need for a limited capacity model. The results so far for change detection have given slopes much greater than that predicted by spatial uncertainty suggesting that a further factor is causing change blindness.
