Change Detection Research Interests
My change detection research, thus far, involves an examination of the role of detail level in successful detection of change, under conditions of both focused and divided attention. Jim Enns and I have recently reported that observers respond to change most quickly and accurately when the change occurs at the level of expected detail. This finding has important implications for an understanding of change blindness for 'attended' objects, and for a broader understanding of what it means to attend to an object. For instance, this work suggests that even when an object is attended, not all of its attributes are available for processing. I am currently conducting further experiments to test the role of expectation in change detection to hierarchical stimuli (e.g., faces).
